Fragile egos
Have you noticed that Gods of all religions have one thing in common? Fragile egos.
You aren't allowed to insult or abuse them. That's always one of the top offenses.
Isn't that weird? You'd think someone who basically bloody owns everything would be a bit less sensitive, wouldn't you?

(If nobody replies, these are rhetorical questions.)

Those are the "Old Testament" class gods, the vengeful types. Newer gods are benevolent regardless of what you do. They share a single identity God/Allah, which is why they're vastly outnumbered in popular perception.

It is interesting to study the evolution of the conception of God through various phases in history. It tends from vengeful natural force to vengeful abstract force to benevolent abstract force.

I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Are you talking about the New Testament? The Koran?
Which are these new Gods? Please be more specific.
Are you talking about how the idea of God has changed in our minds? I don't think it has changed for a majority of the population.

"Old" gods such as those of the Vedic age, the Greeks, the Egyptians, etc are all the vengeful types. They're also associated with forces of nature. Indira, Vayu, Bhoomi, Surya/Ra, etc.

The next level is gods of abstract concepts that only humans can experience. Lakshmi and Saraswati, the goddesses of wealth and knowledge, etc.

Then it gets even more meta. Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, the generic creator, protector and recycler.

Then there is only one "God", now with a capital G, who is all encompassing and benevolent. He has no tiffs with anyone.

I'll bet on it that this sequence is in chronological order. As society evolves, new types of gods are invented to sit at par with humanity's understanding of the universe. In the follow-ups to Rendezvous with Rama Arthur C Clarke and his co-writer (I've forgotten the name) describe a God who resides outside the universe and cannot make his presence felt directly because it would interfere with Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle. He therefore sends mysterious alien spaceships to Earth. Ok, I've given away the ending. Don't bother to read the series now.

This evolution from vengeful force-of-nature type of god to benevolent all-encompassing God is supposedly most visible between the Old and New Testament parts of the Bible.

On a related note, you'll find this post interesting. :o)

There were an older class of God that showed both pleasure and vengeance in very vivid ways. The totems of ancient Mexico and the Red Indians as well as the Shamanic Gods of Africa and the Aborigines still follow the same programming. Trees, beasts, mountains, rivers, etc., they all were either wrathful or accommodating in their own ways.

Something bad happens, God is bloody angry cause we've fscked up somewhere. Something good happens, God is pleased with us. We use a similar trigger to accommodate our current God-belief systems. It's all incredibly interesting, and I fail to understand how desperately naive some people can be with regard to understanding the evolution of 'God' as a mental entity, rather than a real phenomenon.

Also reminds me of claims of how it takes "real faith" to make prayer work. I thought "a real egoistic bastard, this God".

Education from a convent: Real faith is to stop questioning and waiting. "Do your best job and God will do the rest."
Though I have no clue what is 'rest', I'd think if I did my best job, surely that thing would work! If it didn't either I didn't do enough or I had sinned in someother way to have earned the consequences. So I beat myself up basically!
But when people realise you _are_ actually beating yourself up, they turn the tables around, "you _are_ doing your best, let God decide what you deserve, go easy on him. keep the faith. It will all come to you, sooner or later!"
*shrugs*

I remember always wondering why God was so bloody touchy. I mean some old sage in some corner of a forest who's been living without food and water for years and years goes like "I don't like you all that much anymore." and God goes like "RAAAAH! I smite you with my smiting powers!" and makes it rain forever or something.

Oh, oh and if you didn't offer up food and flowers and stuff to him on auspicious days he'd get all pissy. I mean for someone who supposedly created the food and flowers and the people who were offering it up couldn't he go get some of his own?

I don't get it. But the stories(especially ones with smiting) were very cool to me as a kid.

You aren't allowed to insult or abuse them, thats not wholly correct? I've seen a lot of people cursing, insulting Gods of almost all religions in many ways, esp if it wasn't their so called 'own' God. Perhaps, not many in India, perhaps not in public.

Its the way u look at things. I personally dont see obeying God as respecting rather than submitting to some type of ego.

Its actually humans who have ego that don't se the bounties given by god, foremost being human intelligence and consciousness. And nothing comes for free...not even our life and the bounties i mentioned. ;)
