I grew up with Walter Cronkite. From the time I can remember he was there every night. He retired when I was studying journalism in college. We all watched his last broadcast. It was a milestone.
A couple of years later, some friends were in Florida on spring break and bumped into him. They came back to school with stories of how wonderful he was - charming, pleasant and encouraging to those budding journalists. It's always great to learn one of your icons is worthy of your hero-worship.
Cronkite's defining moments as an anchor were when JFK died, when we landed on the moon, and when he was one of the reasons we left Vietnam. I was too young to remember JFK's death but have seen that footage many times. I was still young enough at the moon landing that I don't remember that specific moment with Cronkite, but have seen it replayed many times. I was too young to understand Vietnam and all that it meant.
But, I remember Walter Cronkite. And I always will.

Last night I went to see Ellen Goodman speak in Lindsborg. She was there as part of the Women's Attorneys in Kansas Group. I would have completely missed it if Kris hadn't mentioned it to me. Her speech was mostly about the role of women and how it has changed over the years. She writes about that extensively.
My favorite of her books is "I know just what you mean" about her relationship with her best friend. I wish I had thought to take my copy and have her sign it but I didn't. Pity because there was plenty of time to do that.
I saw Trish there but just visited with her briefly. Obviously, when you're in a group like that you want to visit with the folks you don't get to see but once a year, so I didn't want to monopolize her time.
The last week or so has been busy.
Last Friday, astronaut and moonwalker, Charlie Duke was at the Cosmosphere for a presentation. He was supposed to be there for a 4:15 press conference, and then do the evening events. But, his flight was delayed.
Yes, I know, ironic that an astronaut was waiting on a flight. NASA can get him to the moon and back safely, and the airlines can't get him from Dallas to Wichita on time.
But, the press conference went on anyway.

We had a good turn out and I was thankful because I had spent most of my time working on those sorts of things.

He was at a reception and then spoke to a large group. Afterwards he signed books and other items for folks.

It was a good day/night, but a long one for me. I went to work about 7:30 that morning and by the time the day was done and a few of us had gotten some food it was after midnight. But a lot was accomplished.
Yesterday morning was Coffee at the Cosmosphere. Chris does this every month on the third Thursday. There's a different topic each time, and they show artifacts that illustrate the story. People get a chance to come up afterwards and look at them up close.
Yesterday's topic was the Apollo 11 Moon Landing, because the 40th anniversary of them landing is on Monday. They launched on the 16th, so it was perfect timing for the regular Thursday event.

Chris is very comfortable talking to groups and the media, and is very articulate off the cuff - in short he's a PR person's dream. Yesterday he did the coffee. Today he did a TV interview. Monday he'll do a radio interview. I love it that he's so willing to jump right in.
I haven't gotten around to sharing photos of space journalist Andrew Chaikin or astronuat Joe Engle, who were here earlier.
Andrew Chaikin has authored multiple books about the space program. He was a really personable guy, and you could tell he truly loves his work.

I enjoyed meeting him a great deal.
Just a few days later, we hosted Astronaut Joe Engle. He was the grand marshal in the Fourth of July parade, and the night before he spoke to a very large crowd. It was great to see so many folks who came out to enjoy his presentation.

I, unfortunately, did not get to hear a word he said. There were lots of folks and not another square inch of space for me to stand in. Plus, we were busy preparing for the signing afterwards. But it was great to see so many folks out. Greg took this photo, as well as the one of Chaikin.
Meanwhile, life away from work and events is going on and has its up and downs. I guess it's that way for everyone.

Psychobitch MeMe Roth got completely pwnd by Stuart Varney at FOX news. I want to feel vindicated, or perhaps pleasantly surprised by this. But no.
If you don't know, MeMe Roth is an incredibly dysfunctional woman who calls herself an anti-obesity activist. One of her favorite gags is waiving around a large pair of pants and laughing at them. Comedy gold, right? But she's serious. She tells stories of being five and being totally ashamed of her "fat mother." She doesn't eat until she runs four miles a day, even if she doesn't go running until after 3pm. And of course, she famously compared eating to rape.
MeMe went on FOX news to express that not only should Northwest Stewardesses not be given red uniforms in sizes above 18, but that anyone anywhere near a size 18 shouldn't have that job in the first place. She really is a nutty, hateful woman. People who become full-out activists to spread their own bigotry make me ill. This Stuart Varney chap totally tore into her.
So what's the problem? He disagreed. He interrupted her. He shouted her down. He insulted and shamed her based on her viewpoints--viewpoints that he obviously opposed, but offered no reasoned, logical response to. He implied things about stewardesses jobs that were ignorant and false. He blamed MeMe directly for the unhealthy emphasis young girls place on being thin and attractive. That doesn't help. He didn't let MeMe finish the majority of her sentences. By the end they were yelling at each other. The fact that I agree with his viewpoint does not make his behavior during the interview any more acceptable. Yes, sometimes we have to be impolite to make our point. We're not all Albus Dumbledore, after all. But that is just not necessary and it hurts more than it helps. As usual FOX News employs screaming and emotional manipulation rather than presenting facts. A much better tactic IMHO would have been to let MeMe speak, which would then illustrate what a loon she is. A few well placed questions--you know, like a journalist might ask--would have put her vindictive hatespeak on display for all to mock.
Ultimately, arrogant jackasses in opposition to me are only slightly more annoying than arrogant jackasses who agree with me. That kind of unreasoned jackassery makes everyone who shares that viewpoint look bad.
Yes Madam, you ARE shameful. But not because Stuart Varney says so.

This weekend is going to suck. :(
At least I have a window AC I can pick up from my mom's so the bedroom can at least be cool...
Not sure where Don is so I can reschedule. And I'm not sure Bob has his phone. ARGH. *implode*
It's such an indie-kid hipster song, but it's the first new song I've heard on the radio recently that I've thought to myself, "What's that? I like it!" AND I LISTEN TO A LOT OF RADIO AT WORK, LET ME TELL YOU. A lot. Although mostly it's The Ocean 98.5, which generally sucks. I heard this song on The Zone 91.3, which seems to play a lot of 90s grunge, Smashing Pumpkins and Greenday and such. Interesting.

Peanut will have (but not before they are cleansed head-to-paw) for company 1 dog, 1 fish, 3 teddies. As of now...
This is what the crib/cot bed looks like!
Unfortunately the stuff they have at the store doesn't provide for too many options in terms of the bed linen...they're quite gung-ho on Winnie the Pooh or something called Please Love Me (yeah right!).
I am looking for splashes of color! The more cheerful the better...let's see...
But yay!! And btw, I did a quality check on the bed...sat and bounced on it as much as I can in my state...quite steady!

After I decided watching the first 25+ years of Doctor Who isn't really that appealing an option at the moment, I was advised by a few long-time afficionados to give the latest 4 seasons a try (2005 onwards, that is). I know that would probably involve missing some of the key aspects and storylines from the past (most noticably the Daleks), but I guess I can always go back to search for the old episodes if I need.
So, I watched the first couple of episodes of Doctor Who. They are campy, easygoing and fun. Kinda cartoonish, resembling the Torchwood series (1 and 2 anyway), an adventure-an-episode. As yet. I'm guessing it gets more fun later.
Oh.. And Christopher Eccelston makes a helluva fun Doctor. Natural charm and attitude, kinda infectious grin..
Maybe I'll become a Doctor WhoRe after all (Wait.. Isn't what the Doctor Who fans are called?)
how are you guys?

As I said to
By July 16th, 1969, I was a veteran of watching so many launches that I knew the last hour of news coverage of the night before (midnight-1 a.m.) and the first two hours of the morning coverage (5-7 a.m.) would tell me nothing I didn't already know (in the last hour before midnight they had broadcast the third repeat of the day of an explanatory clip of how the spacesuit diapers functioned), so I went to bed at midnight and set my alarm clock for seven.
At 6:58 my eyes s*p*r*a*n*g open from the first of only two times in my entire life that my internal clock has awakened me with such precision. I deactivated my external alarm before it could buzz, went into the living room to turn on the big hunk-of-furniture color t.v., then got a bowl & spoon, milk, and Cheerios and sat down in front of it, prepared for for what I knew was going to be a flawless launch.
Some events are just microcosms of perfection. That morning was one of them.

I have garlic hanging to dry on the deck. Anyone who wants to help me clean it once it's dry will get some for free. Just so's you know. I also have a lot of broad beans and potatoes to eat. THAT I GREW. OH YEAH! Oh yeah, and carrots, and chard, and too much dill and bergamot. Other things are starting to take off now: beets, more carrots, squash and pumpkins (flowering now), cilantro, lavender, rutabaga, red poppies, marigolds, nasturtiums... I think I'll grow more carrots and less flowers next time, though. I'll have some fall/winter carrots this year, too. The chickpea plants are flowering, but they aren't very big, so I am not expecting huge amounts of chickpeas from them. But hey! I grew some chickpeas, guys! I think that's pretty awesome. Plants like to grow!
I ordered some more seeds from Saltspring Seeds, and I'm so impressed by how fast they got here! I placed the order online exactly two days ago. The seeds arrived by mail today. I'm going to play around with buckwheat, rye and hull-less barleys as cover crops. In the spring I want to grow quinoa, and lots of it. I have discovered that if I eat quinoa for breakfast before work, I have way more energy and don't feel too hungry again for a good long time. It's definitely the breakfast of champions. I like it warm, mixed with some honey, almonds and blueberries... mmmm....
Now, what I want is to get that kayak-cart and a crab trap and a fishing license. I love fresh crab more than I can explain with words. Maybe even more than I love deep-fried squid... and Jason doesn't like it at all! All the more for me!

28. Hosea
Hosea was a prophet whose wife was always cheating on him. He’d be preaching in the town square, but his words were lost on the crowd because the whole time people would be snickering behind his back because they knew that his wife was off getting boned by some other guy. When he got home from preaching to find an empty house, Hosea would wander the streets, track down his wayward wife, and drag her back home, much to the amusement of the townspeople. Sometimes she’d just disappear with a new lover, often for months at a time, but then she’d invariably come crawling back to Hosea. And like a chump, he always took her back. One time, the guy she ran off with decided to enslave her and Hosea ended up having to pay her lover in order to get his cheating wife back.
People couldn’t believe that Hosea still wanted to have her around after all the times she’d cheated on him. One day, Hosea was out in the town square, preaching as always, when someone finally worked up the nerve to ask him why he didn’t simply throw his wife out on her ass. Hosea shrugged and replied by saying that his relationship with his wife was like God’s relationship with us. We are always cheating on God, leaving him for some shiny new idea or temporary pleasure, but for some reason, he’s always willing to swallow his pride and take us back.
And the people finally understood what he’d been preaching about all that time.
